This weekend while driving from Michigan through Wisconsin to Illinois Inoticed that people are already beginning to decorate for Christmas. This makes me wonder if Thanksgiving is being forgotten because it doesn’t bring presents like Christmas. It’s like it’s being rushed because it doesn’t give people something. I really hope that this is not the reason to blow off Thanksgiving. This year more then ever Americans need to give thanks for all the blessings they have, because there is a good chance that someone you know has it worse then you. Maybe the push of Christmas items is out there so soon to help the economy, but I really don’t think Christmas should be an excuse to get the economy running. People don’t have the money they did in the past and don’t need the added pressure and rising costs of presents to deepen their debts. I hope people dont forget the real meanings of both Thanksgiving and Christmas, and that they take time to celebrate both with happiness and are grateful to have family and friends for both days.
I agree whole-heartedly that we shouldn’t blow off Thanksgiving. I do believe that when the economy is in crisis we push our Christmas things out sooner, usually right after Halloween, but that helps us, as well. People are reminded of Christmas earlier so they can spread out their present buying, instead of blowing all their money in one month of frenzied shopping. They can ease into Christmas and begin buying things earlier without wearing out themselves or their budget. I don’t believe Thanksgiving is getting blown off. I think that both holidays sort of work together, bringing families together for a little over a month. They can celebrate the end of the year with a fantastic meal one month, then gifts for each other the next and a final celebration as the year ends. This has been me ranting, hope you enjoyed it. Great post, by the way.
I also noticed Christmas and how it over shadows Thanksgiving in a way. It happens every year, this year is no different. I am one of those people that jumps right into the Christmas spirit but it isn’t because I want presents or I am not thankful. I just have more options for showing my joy with Christmas. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it doesn’t get a huge display. It carries a more peaceful atmosphere. As much as I love Christmas, it is hectic and always involves uncertainties of money. Thanksgiving isn’t surrounded by that so much. I agree both are about being with family, but Christmas is wrapped in activities. That is what makes them each different holidays. We put up lights, trees or a Menorah, and gifts are ways to include those you love. I love giving gifts rather than getting them because I shop with my mom, wrap presents with my brothers, and share time with my external family. This happiness isn’t fueled by greed or money, but with love. I cherish both times of happiness with my family and I hope those without a lot of money do too. Everyone assumes presents require money. Whatever happened to homemade gifts? My family spends Thanksgiving making our own ornaments to give as gifts; that is the spirit of giving in its innocence.
